Fall and winter in southern Wyoming are the perfect seasons for rest and reflection. From the ski trails to the hot springs, to the comfort of a cozy fireplace, there are so many ways to enjoy the cooler seasons in this quiet corner of Wyoming.

Nestled among the scenic beauty that you’d expect in Wyoming, much of the county’s history and heritage is on display at small museums in the western towns of Medicine Bow, Hanna, Saratoga, Encampment and Rawlins. There are photo ops around every bend and an afternoon of “just me time.”
Carbon County, Wyoming is home to the amazing all inclusive resort Brush Creek Ranch. Brush Creek Ranch is famous for their 30,000 acre ranch experience loved by celebrities and awarded the Conde Nast Travel Top USA Resort 8 years in a row. The Brush Creek Ranch Distillery is located on The Farm at Brush Creek Ranch. The Brush Creek Ranch Distillery adds its new Railroad Rye Whiskey to their impressive line up of Straight Bourbon Whiskey, Straight Rye Whiskey, New American Gin, and Brush Creek Vodka.
The Wyoming Backcountry Discovery Route (#WYBDR) is the newest addition to the collection of off-road adventure routes and the 11th in the series. The WYBDR is the most remote discovery route in the least populated state. Wyoming's vast public lands made it an ideal spot for the new route. The 950-mile BDR passes through five mountain ranges with elevations approaching 11,000 feet! The WYBDR can be ridden in either direction from South to North or from North to South.
The Carbon County Visitors’ Council is excited to launch the Carbon County Recreation and Trail Maps. Check out these great interactive recreation and trail maps that are inclusive of all Carbon County outdoor resources.
The Grand Encampment Cowboy Gathering is truly a unique event organized by ranchers, musicians, poets and writers living in the area as a way to help preserve and promote ranching, agriculture and the cowboy culture and lifestyle. The Grand Encampment Cowboy Gathering is held the third full weekend in July.
Dress warm and bring a blanket or folding chair - then kickback and watch the show. Audience participation is encouraged so if you play an instrument or have a song, poem or story you want to share bring it along too!
Hanna, Wyoming has a rich history as a coal mining town and transportation hub. Founded by the Union Pacific Coal Company, Hanna was established for the benefit of its workers and their families. Coal mining was the main industry in the town, but the town's residents always had time for leisure activities like baseball. The remnants of the ghost town of Old Carbon, the first coal camp on the Union Pacific Railroad line, can still be seen south of Hanna. The Carbon Cemetery, located in the ghost town, has been recently funded for restoration and preservation, providing a glimpse into the lives of Carbon and Hanna's earliest residents.
The town boasts picturesque buildings, cottonwood-lined streets, and world-class trout fishing right downtown. From its early days as a transportation hub to its status today as a destination for outdoor enthusiasts, Elk Mountain has something for everyone.
