Residents' Suggestions for Improvements
- » Don’t really have much choice for restaurants and dining
- » Entrance gate at Dog Park needs work
- » Entrance gate latch is broken to small dogarea. People bring their large dogs to small dog area and they are NOT welcome there. PLEASE STOP THEM!!!
- » WFP - Great asset not utilized well enough for it’s potential.
- » Downtown - more retail, less service needed
- » Rawlins Rec - needs air conditioning
- » Sports - field improvement, permit mgmt, water grass
- » Depot - should have been restored rather than gutted
- » Lodging - need more option and one w/conference space
- » Wyoming Frontier Prison: I only went there once to purchase a masquerade mask from the gift store. First walked in and smelled old plumbing. I realize it’s a historical building, but there’s got to be a way to make repairs so people go back for return visits. Rawlins Family Rec Center: Don’t like that it closed on the weekends over the summer. Seasonal allergies keep me from exercising outside and too busy during the week. Was contemplating a membership and didn’t get one because of that. Indoor pistol range: needs more reliable equipment. Golf course: love, love, love the restaurant. Anyway to keep it open in the winter?
- » Restaurants are often closed on weekends, not much variety.
- » Historic Downtown: We need more retail businesses, not so many service-based businesses. The buildings are in disrepair and need to be fixed to get said businesses in. I think another unique and fun restaurant in downtown would be an excellent addition. It would also be great to get Farmers Markets. The Strand must be fixed and used as a (Rock Springs) Broadway Theater and (Sinclair) Parco Theatre. Rochelle Ranch Golf Course: I would love to see more trees on the property, mainly so that it felt more private from the interstate (i.e., trees lining the entire length of the golf course so that the highway wouldn’t be visible or at least less visible). Splash Pad at Depot Park: This area needs more trees. It is so hot and sunny, and there is no real escape. Rawlins Interpretive Trail: The city doesn’t advertise it much as a significant asset, but I know it is here. I think it would benefit from (I sound like a broken record) more trees, doggy waste bag areas, seating, water fountains, and more local art. Green River has the Greenbelt. It is managed by a committee (paid for by the city) of volunteers. They work to get community engagement and new ideas on what should be done with the Greenbelt; I think the Rawlins Walking Path around the whole city would benefit from this. Lodging Options: We need many more hotels; our hotels are turning people away because they are booked so often. We need more hotels, and some properties need to be cleaned up. The old abandoned hotel properties must be torn down, and new hotels or shopping malls must be built. Also, I didn’t put ”needs more improvement” as I think it is terrific, but the Carbon County Fairgrounds should line the property with trees and add more trees around the inside. I also think some buildings could be super cool if they were updated with grant funds.
- » Better eating options would be nice, more variety here in town, very limited with things to do here in town. Have to travel for things to do.
- » More restaurant varieties would be nice.
- » There have been some great improvements to the fairgrounds over the years, but being poorly maintained.
- » Historic downtown-a lot of empty bldgs
- » Restaurants-need more too many have closed because of lack of help and too many good trucks have hurt the restaurants
- » Depot-trains interfere with mtgs and has No wifi
- » Walking path-needs finished and maintained and deer droppings. Lodging-high prices.
- » Washington Park needs more trees, they are dying and not being replaced. The prison could be so much better. Dining is limited, need more options. Downtown Rawlins??? VFW fields are unusable now….Key Club, plant some trees!
- » We need more “healthy” options for dining like protein bowls, salads and things.
- » It would be nice to have more options with more variety, especially in regards to food and activities. There are few cuisines offered, and little to do socially, especially if one doesn’t drink alcohol.
- » Build an amphitheater at Washington
- » Park and remove tennis courts, this would service the whole of the community more than tennis courts ever would. Install vault toilets at parks so that bathroom facilities can be open year-round. Plant trees at parks to start replacing end-of-life trees currently there. Need to build at least one playground in Rawlins that is fully ADA accessible.
- » The Carbon County Museum could use more passionate employees. Last time I went there, there was a teenager in the museum playing Scooby Doo music on her laptop. Period appropriate music would be appreciated for ambience. There are too many vacant store fronts in downtown Rawlins, I would like to see the downtown livelier. I would like to see more fancier establishments (whether food or clothing stores) that could attract outside money, as well as giving residents something to do (like date nights).
- » There needs to be more restaurants and a greater diversity of restaurants. I would like to see a quality fast food such as a Freddy’s. Also, Rawlins is in dire need of a good mexican restaurant.
- » The Rochelle Ranch Golf Course’s restaurant could use improving. The inside could use some spiffing up, and the quality of the food could improve.
- » The historic Union Pacific Train Depot could hold some events. or be open to the public. Need some restaurants to be open on Monday.
- » Staff at Frontier Prison was rude.
- » Downtown looks like a slum.
- » Not a single good restaurant in Rawlins.
- » Depot has lost all of its historic charm inside.
- » The dog park is full of broken glass and it worries me taking my dogs there. Poor quality food, service is poor, food choices and dining choices extremely limited, limited hours
- » Need more restaurants, down town needs upgrades, and more stores. Dog park, I won’t takemy dog there, cause nobody picks up after their dogs.
- » They could each be a little better with minor adjustments or better up keep
- » Golf course is going down hill in maintenace, splash pad in wrong location, depot is too noisy, dog park wrong location, museum and prison need to rotate displays and better advertising.
- » Restaurants - more variety. Such limited hours for some of them Sports complex - snack/foodshack. Train Depot - never open
- » Trail & walking path - needs lots more signs to complete the trail. Some of the walking path is thru neighborhoods with no directions
- » Rawlins needs many improvements, the town does not offer a family center. The Rec center is for certain things. I homeschool my child, we have nothing to do here for incentive or joy. We are actually looking to relocate to find somewhere that offers
- » An active homeschool group and More family based activities. Washington park is same ol’, it could use a huge upgrade like Sinclair park with many school aged children in the neighborhood. The splash park is based for very young kids. What about teens? Family center, bowling alley, arcade, outdoor pool for summer, gosh I could go on and on.
- » Need to improve places where animals are held.
- » Rec Center needs to be remodeled.
- » Outdoor Shooting Range needs to be remodeled.
- » A band shell is needed for Music in the Park!
- » Not enough dining options. Don’t golf.
- » Fairgrounds restaurant poor, seems to be lacking in users.
- » VFW Fields - I have been there for games and the lights turn off. There should be protection from the Wyoming wind.
- » Need more restaurants if possible with our population.
- » Most of these assets do not promote have effectively so outsiders know benefits. VFW Park needs concession stand. Shooting range outside needs more open hours. Interpretive trails no one knows where they are!
- » Not a lot of options for dining except mexican food - need more family dining.
- » Not enough places to eat.
- » No good stores to shop.
- » Need variety of options to shop.
- » Better stores to shop
- » More restaurants and fast food places
- » Golf course needs to go away!
- » Need more restaurants.
- » A few more fast food establishments, especially on West end.
- » Museum: needs mature/knowledgeable attendants--more like passionate, long-time resident retiree instead of high schoolers doing homework and/or chatting on Tic Toc (Also, how about playing period background music and/or Wyoming history videos to add ambience (Carbon County features would be a +); what about souvenirs for visitor purchase?); Downtown: too many vacant store fronts (need more shops like Windswept Goods), Strand Theater should be in operation; Restaurants: need more restaurant options for Gen Y/young couples (other than Asian--tho both Rawlins Asian options are great!); Golf course: restaurant looks dated and is understaffed--could be great couples venue with improved interior, more servers, and better food (does have BEAUTIFUL views!); Dog park: an indoor winter dog park with a walking track option would be awesome (how about seasonally repurposing a fair ground building during winter???)
- » Need development and expansion.
- » Make places more welcoming and adding more things for people to do and want to keep coming back. The train depot, make it an attraction. walking paths/trail better advertising and access to maps and signs.
- » The rates they charge for motel rooms are way too high.
- » Need more restaurants, that isn’t fast food, that serves breakfast.
- » I don’t go out very much. Usually only to work and back. Wish there were more dining places. Not much for younger people to do.
- » More option for food choices
- » Should have passenger trains again.
- » More options of restaurants
- » Demolish old motels
- » Not enough choices
- » Need toilets walking paths
- » Prison cold, no heat
- » Museum better lighting
- » Sports complex & VFW toilets and concession
- » Walking paths need bathrooms, porches to be accessible to older people and children etc. Prison needs heat when needed. Museum needs better lighting. Historical needs restoration of older buildings. Needs more restaurants with better quality. Rec Center minor fixing of ceiling walls.
- » Improve maintenance - trash, weeds, signage.
- » Washington park needs a lot of repairs and upgrades. Walking path gets overgrown.
- » No place to eat, over priced city utilities.
- » The City’s run down appearance, especially the west end entrance off I80, is so depress-ed and trashy. This totally effects the first impression that travelers have passing thru Rawlins. Building codes need to be enforced and fines charged. Somehow there must be a way to give our town a face lift with fresh paint. Downtown looks great. Other places too. But why would anyone choose to explore our community at first glance?
- » Rec Center needs set hours
- » The sports fields are in need of repair.
- » The grass is always in bad shape
- » Historic downtown needs more and for places to be open on weekends. Dining has a similar issue where so many places close on weekends and the service/food is lacking. The train depot is cute but not large enough to be an actual attraction. It would be nice if we could do some landscaping in the more visited areas of the walking path because it’s nice and maintained, but the sections people most often see are ugly. We have enough lodging options but the old motels are an eye sore and a safety hazard.
- » Rec center needs enough staff in order to be open 7 days a week. Skate park is a huge step forward but it needs to be added to.
- » Walking path on Southside needs maintained, splash pad needed to be bigger with more attractions on ie buckets and such, Rec Center more activities for younger kids.
- » Clean up
- » I feel like there needs more food options because it’s just the same old food. Yes adding a Starbucks was a good idea but it didn’t bring food it just brought more drinks to this town, yes Starbucks has food but it’s mainly sweets and breakfast items. There just has to be more food options cuz it’s just the same old McDonalds Taco Bell subway and burger king that has always been here I just feel there has to be more take out options
- » Some places just need better tree trimming, maintenance. Other places like dining options we need better accommodations to house people who want to work.
- » I’m not exactly sure which area historically downtown Rawlins is, but if it’s Cedar st, it looks more like a conglomerate or newer and older abandoned dilapidated buildings (other than Windswept Goods). Restaurants; Subway might be healthiest option in town. The only place we have had a consistently good food is Ichiban. Most other places are disgusting. Other than Ichiban, cuisine is bad quality and limited to burgers, pizza, Mexican or microwaved Thai.
- » I think we need to upgrade lots of things to have more community involvement. More things for kids to do and things to do with families
- » I feel the prison could benefit from increased staff training/education. The guide for my tour group was poorly spoken, not very knowledgeable about the prison or it’s history, and also made several off-color jokes that I felt did not fit the tone of the experience. Overall, the tour was underwhelming at best, boring and even annoying at worst.
- » While the rotating cast of food trucks offers a little more variety, Rawlins is, in my own opinion, very limited in terms of dining diversity.
- » The Rec Center needs to be open on weekends.
- » Since the rec director retired the Rec Center has definitely gone way backwards. The shooting ranges used to be the best in many states and now are a joke. They went from many many events, fundraisers and community programs to barely being open and run absolutely horrible. Downtown just doesn’t have the shopping options to bring in tourists. Way too many offices in the area and no real shopping. Why would you even want to go?
- » To few restaurants and very limited breakfast options. The rec center needs better maintenance-it’s kind of dirty and dingy.
- » I wish there was a community committee that didn’t require an annual fee. This would allow more communication between individuals and businesses to help improve promotion and attendance to the many fun events that Rawlins does have. I believe this would bring more collaboration and even better amenities for those living and visiting Carbon County.
- » More restaurants and a more vibrant downtown would be great.
- » We have great dining options, but we need more of them.
- » We need more restaurants. The path needs more shade. Rawlins downtown is an eye-sore anymore and looks debilitated is so many areas, also lacks good quality and affordable shopping opportunities. The town overall has gone downhill with the lack of maintenance and care by property owners and obvious lack of enforcement by our local government. No updates to our parks have been made to entice families to enjoy those spaces frequently. There is so much lack of respect but the community towards the city I believe ithas resulted in dilapidated buildings, poor condition of outdoor spaces and general participation in activities.
- » Just normal maintenance
- » Walking path is full of weeds or garbage.
- » Not really a walking path
- » Need to do something about the alkaline ponds and the smell at the golf course. The walking path needs more shade trees.
- » Wyoming Frontier Prison should do morefrequent small scale events not everything does not have to be as big as the sunset at the slammer or Halloween
- » Restaurants need more variety
- » Downtown sucks. Its almost all real estate offices, gyms, tax assistance centers, and empty buildings. We need more cute little shops to wander through ( like windswept goods) With public friendly business hours.
- » Rochelle Ranch needs better water hazards, the ones they haveare ugly muddy alkali patches that stink and fester bugs. if were going to be stuck with a golf course can't it at least be pretty?
- » Carbon County Fair Grounds are ok i guess, but i like to see more concrete around. it turns into a big muddy mess any time it rains. would it really be too much to put in a few sidewalks, and maybe pave at least a portion of the parking lot? Washington park needs more picnic tables, and better swings.
- » The skate park is sad. just really sad. it literally looks like your just storing skate equipment in the tennis court until it either gets a new better home or taken out with the trash. its like they didn’t even try.
- » The walking trail needs more shaded areas. Weather that be through trees or attractive fences or art installations i don’t care just get more shade. We need a proper conference hotel, I believe we are the only “Major City” along i80 that doesn’t have one.
- » It could be better, could be more. There isn’t very much to do.
- » We definetly could use a few reliable restaurants that are open often
- » We need more things in Rawlins. Most of us just spend time at walmart.
- » More parks or more attractions so people could enjoy their time in rawlins
- » I would enjoy more options for lunch so it would be nice to have more fast food options
- » I believe our restaurants are going downhill or we need more restaurants
- » Need more food options
- » I think the things need improvement are just things without much. Our parks have been the same since I was a kid and our public spaces for teens are scarce. No arcade, 24/7 bowling alley, mall, or trampoline park. Spaces like those would make hanging out with friends a much more enjoyable experience. Whenever me and my friends go hang out are options are one of our houses, a restaurant, or one of the parks. Right now must public spaces are geared toward adults. It feels like we have more bars than parks.
- » Dog Park : really small not a lot of room for the dogs and Key Club park isn’t that big or entertaining to kids.
- » Splash pad: Very boring for kids with no siblings and get very crowded easily. Maybe add a water bucket that tips over every couple minutes or something that would be entertaining for kids of all ages.
- » Rec Center: I hate trying to play volleyball with only one net that’s hardly ever set up. Maybe make one more court or try having a system where the volleyball nets are set up on specifc days throughout the week.
- » Restaurants/Dining: There aren’t a lot of options to eat so everyone always chooses the same things making it really hard get food before certain events. (I.e sports) just try subbing out things people don’t really want or build more establishments. Maybe even try making a food truck area where it’d be easy for them park and easy to find and access.
- » A bit of everything, definitely need more things to do here that are cheaper tho
- » The walking paths are usually very small and crumbling apart.
- » The museum isn’t the greatest of museums even the museum in the prison is better than the actual museum
- » The walking path cuts off in some places.
- » City needs to take care of their properties
- » More restaurants options would be great.
- » Washington park just needs better manicuring.
- » Would like to see a Rainbow Bridge a the dog park. People could put their deceased pets collars on the Bridge rails. The splash pad should have a couple of days at the end of the season for dogs and owners to enjoy. The fair grounds should be more accessible for the Handicap. Why can’t we open up the fair grounds for winter truck parking when the roads are closed. Who owns the trailer park across from the fair grounds? This could be upgraded forcamper parking during fair week. Fair displays for open exhibits should be upgraded, and there should be a supervisor in attendance to monitor displays and prevent theft and breakage. Washington park needs to have continuous maintenance to bring up the lawn and surroundingareas to a more pleasant environment.
- » My family and I have the need to voice our thoughts on how this town needs to improve on creating more social places for families to enjoy, as well as to provide a social space for families to be able to be comfortable with taking their kids and enjoy themselves, this town needs more family friendly, kid friendly and affordable facilities, like a kids gym or somewhere that kids can release energy all year round
- » Most are more options needed.
- » Downtown needs more businesses.
- » Walking path needs clear signage and maps available.
- » Need public restrooms
- » Everything is outdated
- » The baseball fields needs work ! We need more lodging that’s Durant go up when roads are closed that’s very unfair for people to get stuck when roads close! We need a indoor riding arena fir horse enthusiasts since winter is ver long here The splash pad was closed most of summer why with it still being 80-90 degrees in the fall it can be used!!
- » Hotel prices are sky high. Parks should be watered as should cemetery. Ball complex needs a concession stand.
- » Walking trails need to be better maintenance as far as weed and brushes, pot holes along the trails, Washington park could use some upgrades as far as equipment and bathrooms, the tennis court is looking pretty worn down we could really use a new one.
- » Downtown Rawlins has a lot of empty rundown buildings and could use more public bathroom options. Restaurant variety stinks compared to other communities this size
- » Old pen- the age restrictions for halloween tours should be changed/different if a parent wants to take they’re 10, 11, 12 year old child they should allow it maybe with a consent form. Restaurants/dining- really not a whole lot of options with good quality food at a affordable price, especially for a family of 5.
- » Family rec center is crazy expensive for membership and it’s a bit ridiculous that the only people who really get discounts are the refinery workers, the air conditioning system could be alot better especially for the kids rollerskating and rollerskating should go on year round, I don’t like how it stops during summer time when that’s the time the kids really need somwthing to do.
- » LODGING OPTIONS ARE RAN DOWN AND IN NEED A OF REMOVAL. THEY ARE AN EYESORE IN OUR COMMUNITY
- » Restaurants to have more consistent and open hours
- » Outdoor shooting range to have more hours and support staff
- » Need cheaper restaurants like a sandwich shop downtown, a bakery and all the reviews I saw for hotels were scary, can Rawlins start having a Halloween parade? That would be fun!
- » Community events. Why is there nothing on the 4th of July? Why is the derby the biggest event of the year. Why are there not events that aren’t ran by the downtown, why is nothing done with the empty rotting buildings in the downtown.
- » Walking path cracking, constant debri and water pooling make it difficult to recreate with anything more than a bike or by walking.
- » There isn’t any “Historic Downtown Rawlins”. Keeping the Ferris Hotel would have been historic. Renovating the Fox Theater would be historic. Whoever decided to put up those hawks or eagles or whatever they are on the street corners should be fired, they have nothing to do with historic or modern Rawlins/Carbon County.
- » There are only a couple of restaurants that decent, the rest are so-so.
- » We don’t need two golf courses sucking up water. Pick one and close the other.
- » I like the splash pad, but it really needs a nice playground to go with it and more tables. Putting in small BBQ grills would also be nice.
- » The Fairgrounds have had some improvements over the years, but it still looks rundown.
- » Frontier prison looks beat to death. Used to sell items inmates made like leather items. Downtown is almost a ghost town with so many empty building that look trashed from the outside. Owners should be made to keep up their buildings instead they look like filthy abonded buildings. No stores downtown worth shopping in other than overpriced tourists items. Downtown is not worth shopping because there is nothing to shop for. Lodging Rawlins should have started upkeep a long time ago and enforce building codes all these old hotel and resteraunt owners are just waiting for the buildings to collapse or catch fire to collect insurance. In the last 33 years I have seen Rawlins go downhill so horribly that these surveys are a joke. Resteraunt owners need to make the price of their food match the quality because I understand inflation what I don’t understand is it being acceptable for lousy service. Change your prices then change your quality. Resteraunts are a joke including fast food all are ridiculous recently I choose to not go out here. Rawlins has been better and can be better these surveys mean nothing unless business owners are made to clean up their act. I would not ever stay in these hotels
- » Prison needs to be able to tell the actual stories of inmates.
- » The downtown area keeps losing businesses and appears as though nothing is coming to replace those businesses. It just seems to get worse.
- » The fairgrounds could improve with more organization and administrative staff to follow up. I assisted with an event at the Jeffrey Center and our organization was forgotten about. I had to follow up several times and the building maintenance supervisor made sure everything went well.
- » Rec center is in overall poor condition and dirty. Downtown Rawlins is in desperate need of business and the condition of some of the buildings are very poor. Service at many businesses is very poor
- » Rec Center is outdated and has awful hours for weekends and summers. We could also have more options for dining, especially least food services.
- » Lack of pride in ownership, our city looks horrible, no community pride, exterior is worn down with dead lawns, no curb appeal and the government puts their head in the sand and focuses on their personal vendettas and shutting out the public!
- » More coverage like trees.
- » Each are just barely eeking out an existence, need to raise the bar. Of course related to workforce issues, and the lack of support for service industry workers. Rawlins hasn’t gotten it-that not everyone and every thing is about Oil & Gas anymore. The boom bust paradigm is not a working dogma.
- » Needs a face lift for people to come to Rawlins. Having a gym, HR Block and real estate agencies in a main street setting seem out of place to bring people to downtown. Should have more retail and restaurants, brewery, or attractions.
- » Depot-availability and condition more visibility for use development Sports complex-conditionof fields is improving but the grounds are just nasty with weeds.
- » Although they are fairgrounds they could be cleaner, especially the bathrooms. There needs to be a real cleaning crew at least on site for bigger events. There is little dining options, new ones can be expensive, and they always leave before the 2 year mark which is actually the most important in a business like that.
- » I feel that the weeds beautification attraction is what keeps people wanting to come back here as a visitors because it’s a pretty little town the weeds no alternative the business areas are atrocious the weeds growing up through our grades where our trees are the trash in the gutters it has definitely declined over the years appearance is a main attraction it makes people want to say oh this is a cute little town let’s stop and see what they have it’s simple make thesebusiness owners responsible for the front of their buildings!
- » Rent is ridiculous, teens need more to do,
- » What we do have is not kept up and looksworn out most of the time. Weeds all over town crappy roads
- » Rawlins as a whole needs improvement, we have a whole township of younger generation that doesn’t want to work, our population is at a decline due to the lack of housing, businesses, and education for children. We have more businesses close yearly due to the inability to employee people, and instead of investing into our community to promote growth for population and businesses we throw tax paying dollars at trying to make the town “pretty”.
- » Downtown looks like trash, needs more shopping experiences and renovation.
- » Golf course can be better and needs to do more to generate revenue rather than suck money rom the City’s general fund.
- » As a teenager who has lived her most her life I can tell you it’s not very fun nor anything entertaining/enjoyable here. Frankly once I become a teen there was nothing every to do they closed. the bowling alley, there’s no arcade, the whole town says they want to keep us out of trouble and out of harms way yet the city gives 15-18 year olds nothing to do or go through the year yes in the summer there’s the carnival but that’s only 4 days out of the whole year. There needs to be more for teens here not just the older generations. Especially in the winter there’s nothing to keep us entertained. It’s dangerous for us who can drive to have to drive hours in the winter and all year just to have a bowling alley or even an arcade or a decent movie theater or anything like such.
- » Restaurants and fast food places cannot seem to retain employees. Food trucks are taking advantage of that situation as they don’t need the staff, there are plenty of food options with all the food trucks.
- » Outdoor Shooting Complex is very nice but the hours are too limited. Only oneshooting range can be open at a time because of staff issues. I would like to see these facilties more available.
- » We need more lodging options.
- » Historic Rawlins has a lot of empty shops, and that’s not a good look.
- » There’s only one lodging facility in town, where a group can have lodging meals, and meeting rooms in one spot.
- » Downtown and restaurants need more options and differing styles. Walking path needs mitigation/beautification
- » We are in desparate need of more shopping options and restaurant options here
- » The museum needs expansion so it canfunction correctly. It should be in a NEW large building where tourists will be drawn to visit. The old church is exactly that, an old church. Washington is still the best in Rawlins, often brown grass, unkept, and needs a caretaker. Downtown is so narrow to drive in; park in, and really is a put off. If a HANDICAPPED PERSON wants to visit a store, they must walk from the nearest corner after they find a way to jump the too high curb. The parking spaces suck. Try to open a pickup door all the way without hitting another car; or just try to open a car door. At one time there were flower pots, etc., which were welcoming and colorful. there are buildings without signs and signs without a business. Sloppy. Weeds around the sidewalks are ugly. The sidewalks need to be cleaned.
- » Restaurants and dining options are pretty limited in Rawlins especially on the weekends. I get some places want to be closed but they lose out on lots of business.
- » Downtown- better taken care of, more shops in empty buildings.
- » Restaurants— consistent businesses
- » VFW- completely re do. Other towns baseball fields are WAY better taken care of and it’s something we cannot show off because of how poorly they are.
- » Water bill costs too much. Can’t afford to eat out.
- » All of these amenities are rundown.
- » Overall I believe Rawlins could really use some much needed updated and improvements.
- » Starting with entrances, intersections, crosswalks and trees. Most of the trees have overgrown signs and intersections alone. The colors of the businesses in town some really stand out in color like a sore thumb. The cleanliness of Rawlins and buildings that are standing that have been neglected including all the weeds. The parks need updated with new equipment. The skate park needs to be concrete with some very interesting challenges for skaters. I feel the water park could have a few more activities that include water use, sprayers, games etc. The dog park could use a couple obstacle challenges. The walking trail some exercise challenges along the way with signs to instruct. I feel the REC center should allow .25 or .50 cent charges in winter just to walk laps upstairs for all to be able to get some kind of exercise during winter without having to pay a usage fee for the day or a membership. I feel like the REC could havea lot more available and expand. Have you seen YMCAs? Downtown I feel the building need to be filled but also properly repaired. We need more things available that are not always the same business or type of competition. We could really use a shopping plaza that carries jewelry, brand name clothing and shoes as well as a place to buy fragrance items. We lack these here. I’ve been to a lot of outdoor outlets and I think if we had more that accommodated to our community and especially teens they would be more excited for one to work as well as shop and get discounts while doing so. I think we should have a survey offered to teens 15-19 years of age as they make up a great portion of our town. Sometimes they are left in the shadows. I’d also like to see more family events in town that do not allow drinking or vaping of any sort. It’s a family event which should be left that way. I know not everything can be changed in a moment but I believe things can definitely change if all are willing to make a change and see greater things come. I’ve been to Laramie Wy and all the way to Chicago Il and I believe though we are a small place we can incorporate things to bring the attractionneeded and wanted to our home.
- » I would like to see better security for the exhibit hall. I believe the participation would be higher if there was more security measures like cameras or more locked display cases.
- » Downtown needs many more businesses to be able to thrive. A decent price on avail-able properties would be a great start. But downtown is a small portion of a rotting town. The neighborhoods and main streets are hideous to the eye and not welcoming at all.
- » Downtown Rawlins is depressing, it needs more shopping options and entertainment. The few stores left are great, but too few of them left.
- » There are not very many dining options in
Rawlins. As a longtime resident I frequently leave town to eat out, as there are not many reasonable options here. There are a few reliable options, but only a few (3 that I’m aware of).
- » Downtown Rawlins has so many emptybuildings and not very many businesses. I don’t know how to fix that either. I do appreciate that downtown has some nice features, like the bird statues and splash pad, but there are not enough businesses or places to eat to draw people there. I feel like the prison property has a lot of potential/space that maybe could be used for things or expanded upon. To be fair, I’m not sure what the limitations are for historical places. We have lost several restaurants in the last couple of years, its a bummer, I wish we had more. I know that finding employees is an issue. Not sure how to fix that either.
- » Last tour of the old pen, guide just talked about how the movie crew wrecked everything, not many history stories. Historic downtown has nothing historic to draw people in to see, how about marking some of the sites from the old west, where they found big nose george etc...
- » I said that the Downtown, Dining options and Washington Park needed improve-ment. I said this because our downtown is a little stark, but has come a very long way. It will never be what it once was, but it’s come a long way. Dining in Rawlins is a struggle. It’s not the prices, it’s the options...and availability. Washington Park dried up with the water issues due to no fault of it’s own, but will come around once it has a chance to do so. I grew up here and moved away. It’s a great place to be, and I’m proud to be back home. Rawlins is what you make of it. There are worse places to be, as there are better. If you don’t like it...move on or make a change to better it.
- » Downtown needs more stores. Growing up there was shopping and never went out of town to buy. Need more option in dining and have places open. Lodging we need cleaner motels. Wehave some good options but also some very poor choices
- » We do not need the city to provide commercialized entertainment. What a waste of money.
- » To make sure amenities are open at key times.
- » The ball fields both need improvements.
- » We need new and exciting places to eat.
- » I wish people wanted to work. Even if the attractions are great, people won’t stop or spend as much money if there aren’t places to eat. We also aren't pulling traffic off I-80 because of the lack of restaurants. I heard a family traveling that they’d rather eat gas station food than any restaurants in Rawlins. Someone in the party said they wouldn’t eat gas station food in Rawlins. We have a bad name because of lack of restaurants.
- » Hours for shooting range extended.
- » Dining days closures-something open all days of week-all closed on same days- outside of fast food.
- » Beautiful downtown buildings that are not utilized.
- » Walking path -please mow in spring.
- » Walking by it in the late spring early summer makes me jumpy due to snakes. Restaurants - I know it’s beyond tough to staff a Restaurant. Probably one of the hardest things to do. Maybe a window with outside seating. Embarrassing when you have to tell people from out of town we have 1 or 2 consist Restaurants. Mikes is reliable and so is 19th hole. Aspen house is hit & miss. Bucks is hit & miss. Shogunz is never open & it’s not the same.
- » I tell people took for our food trucks. Josh does an amazing job with Flippin! Selena is always good. Rarely have something wrong at LA Barata. Wyo Bowls is a great lunch. Dub Dubs always seems to sell out when they come - same with wyo philly. Good Days is so different and good! Not sure how that problem gets helped but it would help the moral of town.
- » Downtown needs more shops and fun things to do
- » WFP would be better if they did more living history tours We need mor variety in our restaurants. It’s all Mexican, bar food/comfort food, or Asian food. (They are good but id like more variety)
- » Rec center could use more treadmills I just don’t like the golf course The skate park is just saaaaad. It looks very half assed. Someone just plopped a couple ramps in a tennis court? Yikes. The walking path has no shade and needs drinking fountains.
- » Downtown is a joke. There’s little businesses, half the buildings are empty and it’s not visuallyappealing at all. The bird and structures do nothin to make it nicer— we need more focus ongetting businesses to the community.
- » The City and business owners need to invest to improve these attractions. The Old Pen, one of the City’s gems, is under poor management and the director is resistant to new ideas which is making the facility deteriorate and stagnate. The City facilities are doing fine and there are efforts to improve them, but the work takes money and resources, and it would be great to see community volunteers assisting rather than complaining all the time.
- » I have gotten food poisoning or had horrible experiences at several of our restaurants. Many of them are closed on the same days leaving us with few options for eating out.
- » Needs more variety.
- » Downtown has too many empty building, way too many old run down or condemned motels/hotels. Could be used for apart-ments affordable housing. Not enough variety in food, recreation activities like bowling or indoor arcade. West side of town needs upgrades.
- » Downtown is awful. I avoid it as much as possible. The street structure is horrible. Parking is impossible. Those damn birds need to fly away.
- » This town needs more food options. Needs activities and opportunities for kids.
- » Downtown desperately needs more shopping and dining
- » For me, I would like to see the water hazards full again at the golf course
- » The old motels need demolished. In the West End of town needs cleaned up! Most are overpriced or have not enough attractions to be worth the money.
- » Could use more signs. The cops need to inform visitors the street they are on is one way or put up some signs by the entrance and the exit.
- » Yes, we have the walking path, but getting to the walking path from Inverness is risky by foot or bike. I always go park by the baseball fields and then walk/bike. Crossing the intersection is scary. Also have come across agitated antelope while walking past the rec center and have heard of rattlesnakes. That deters me from walking on some days that or the snow accumulation. I would say the Higley intersections are not pedestrian safe. Going straight on Higley while driving, I’ve been cut off from people merging way too many times to consider walking that way or crossing from city market to tractor supply etc. Would love to see more plants/art. When I tell people I’m from rawlins, they say they just drive right on by when traveling through or haven’t heard of it. Some assume mostly families of those in the prison live here and consider it a rough place. My impression as a resident is different. Family gets bored when they come to visit.
- » Need chamber of commerce for visitors and potential visitors
- » Directional signs are misleading Town needs cleaned up and the entrances need to be more accentuated. Need more motels on west end of town
- » Most places have staff that would rather be on their phone than helping customers Too many parks requiring a lot of maintenance. Perhaps less grass on all parks and more plants conducive to the desert geography
- » Public art would brighten up the town. Forms of art should be everywhere Lot of empty stores perhaps decorate windows on the empty stores with vibrant art
- » Most restaurants are closed on sundays and mondays. Perhaps rotate
- » Are there any public restrooms???
- » Are there any trash receptacles except downtown area???
- » There is much room for improvement regarding recycling. Residents have to choose to recycle, and must go out of their way to do so, resulting in a build up of garbage that detracts from the outside environment. It would be much more beneficial if a city-wide recycling program were made available to everyone. I also think we should heavily invest in art, especially with local artists. But beautification can extend to planting more trees, more flowers, and in creating more green spaces for the community. Trees and shrubs can also be planned with permaculture principles to have the added benefit of providing wind breaks, which could greatly improve the quality of life for residents who spend their winters here.
- » One thing that I want to bring up is Rawlins needs to place a higher value on its histor-ical buildings. Since I’ve been here, several historic houses have been torn down. When historic buildings are renovated, they are often modernized (such as the courthouse) causing those buildings to lose their histor-ical authenticity, character, and charm. There have been talks about how the motels in Spruce are an eyesore. However, I think if they were renovated, they could be a tourist attraction (such as showing what Rawlins would’ve looked like in the 1950’s).
- » People in Rawlins seem not to care about Rawlins.
- » My biggest complaint is how much trash and broken glass are in the public areas, it makes me not want to spend time there.
- » Rawlins needs more things to do, like bowling, drive in theater, skating rink, not at the rec center, and more restaurants.
- » Sidewalks are never cleaned of snow or debris. Bathrooms are often locked way to soon in the year. Streets aren’t cleaned of snow and it makes travel hard. And no they really aren’t despite the city saying otherwise. Over 90% of town would agree with this. Including my family who works for wydot and the city available work force limited, 10% are good. The rest are rude lazy and worry about their phones and social media then about the people who pay their wages.
- » I can’t say that the restaurants in town are accommodating for hours! Art is always welcome! Would be great to have a local butterfly somewhere for people to stop and take a picture with. Such as a swallowtail or Painted lady.
- » Restrooms at the parks are not open, they need to be.
- » Signs for vehicles to slow down, where there is a lot of children playing.
- » I have ideas for more public art! Some staff are trained, others rude, depends on where you go.
- » Residents need to keep the weeds out of their yards.
- » When getting off on Higley Blvd. an RV cannot get through the tunnel. There is no sign telling them to go on Hugus St. to get downtown. It needs to be posted so they won’t get lost.
- » A sign needs to be put on Hugus St. for
- » RV’s or Semi trucks that get off of Higley Blvd trying to get downtown. There is no turnaround once they get to the tunnel.
- » A sign should be put on Hugus St. or by Bolten Park so RV’s & Semis can turn on Hugus. There is no where for them to turn around at the tunnel.
- » I think the golf course was a bad choice for our communities. The money would have been spent on something the whole community cold have use of instead of 10% that use it. It does not bring in travelers.
- » Signs for under pass on the other side.
- » Rawlins might do well to focus on attracting visitors from other parts of Carbon and surrounding counties first before trying to attract random passerbys. I know that the quilt shop on Spruce sometimes gets repeat visitors from other regions of Wyoming. My family has gone to Parco theater for a musical presentation that was well-attended, educational, and fantastic overall. Why doesn’t the county seat offer such venues??? Children’s activities are high priority in Rawlins and that is GREAT but not all visitors have children to entertain. Also, we have lots of”rough and tumble” venues (e.g. how many “saloon” type bars does one small town need?); what about a nice bakery, boutique shop, art gallery, tasteful gift shop? Again, tasteful and thoughtful --not just some money-grubber venture. Finally, some shop-keepers prefer not to be open or keep shorter hours on the weekend when visitors often come to town.
- » Bathrooms are shut down in fl. Need more bathrooms available. Not enough staff at restaurants.
- » Need chairs up at the rec center walking track.
- » Please be considerate of older/elderly in walking trails/rec center parks of the availability of bathroom facilities needed all year long. Also needed benches spread out for seniors.
- » It would be awesome if the trash removal providers worked with City Recycle to have both trash and recycled items picked up from local residents.
- » Every entrance into Rawlins all you see are junk yards and business who don’t comply with city ordinances.
- » I feel like there should be more interesting things because there really isn’t.
- » Not sure about recycling receptacles, but there are lots of trash cans around the walking trail.
- » Several times we have planned to go shopping at the weekend (because we work during theweek) only to find most of the stores are closed with the exception of Windswept Goods, the grocery stores, tractor supply and Bomgaars. It’s almost impossible to shop or get services locally because either they don’t exist or if they do, they are closed at the weekend so we go out of town for most goods and services. We recently got a delivery from Salt Lake and the people asked what is there to do in town? I was stumped. The prison is the only thing I could come up with that would vaguely interest young people from Salt Lake with en extra 2 hrs to spend exploring.
- » Certain areas of Rawlins are aesthetically pleasing, but most of the high travel areas (287, the view of Rawlins from I-80, Spruce Street) that visitors are most likely to see are run down, poorly maintained, abandoned, or just ugly. It is not an inviting look.
- » My biggest disagree comes from historic sites. They are not even taken care of or even shown any love. Why would tourists go? The old pen barely gets support even though it’s the biggest attraction. And let’s talk about Rawlins Springs the reason this town began. That are is dangerous to walkers, the trail is in major disrepair, trashy, overgrown, Russian olives need to be removed from the spring itself as they are leeching all the water. This could be a very fun informative area for tourists but the city acts like it isn’t even an afterthought.
- » The restrooms at the golf course need to be fixed and functional for the golf season.
- » I would like a central calendar that people can submit events to. I have looked for events in the past and not been able to find the info. If there is one already, I would like that information to be given to every business along with seeing a marketing campaign promoting it.
- » Our sidewalks around town really need improvement. most are mangled by tree roots (if there are sidewalks to begin with)
- » We need to improve this town and make it better
- » We need more things in our community to do to entertain visitors. Our movie are not open as much we don’t have any bowling alley’s or things for people to hang out with family events.
- » Public morals would enhance the beauty of our town
- » Abandoned buildings needs removed.
- » Need more benches and trash cans
- » Business hours are inconsistent to the availability of workers which leaves visitor sometimes not being able to find what they are needing on weekends. Rec center isn’t open to even cater to the people living here on the weekends.
- » OUR DOWNTOWN IS FAKE! Why are building windows look like they have business in them? Why is there no support for those existing? What is being done for business ready, recruitment? In 2019 it is said the downtown 60% empty that’s not true….it holds true today….Our lights look like we are a town of X-mas all year round.
- » We need growth and business to thrive also for tourism we should have a sign for sights like the red paint cave and adobe town
- » There are a ton of empty building such as the old subway , some older hotels a alot of stores on spruce such as the old mall, and also some stuff downtown that could be put to good use. An idea may be to pair up with COVE to help make homeless shelters avaliable orsomeone were to stay for women and children that need somewere for the night.
- » Love the small town feel of Rawlins, just looks run down when you drive thru at first with the forgotten hotels and closed businesses, people are very friendly and helpful here, love all the community activities! Hoping for a Halloween parade in the future! Am really liking living here and learning the history of Rawlins with the different tours offered too! Love also how you can walk to local businesses and shops, just bummed because the fun small shops have the samehours as my job so I don’t get to go to them as often as I would like, thanks for this opportunity to speak up!
- » Why is everything focused on 2 blocks downtown. The town needs cleaned and there needs to be more focus on making this an enjoyable place to live. Not just about trying to attract tourists.
- » If you come into town from I-80 from either direction, you see old, rundown, trashy, abandoned looking buildings, businesses, or hotels. The only direction that looks nice coming into town is from the North via 287. Our roads are, especially the highway through town (Third St. andSpruce) are always in need of repair because heavy truck traffic is not required to use the bypass between I-80 and 287. This is also a safety issue.
- » The last time I was at the Rawlins Springs Park, it was overgrown with brush, dirty, and the caboose was in dire need of a renovation. Although Washington Park is beautiful, the restrooms were locked when I was there last and that was in the middle of the summer. The signs are as ugly as sin and placed inexactly the right place to make it difficult to see around them when turning from one street to another.
- » Unless you’re heading to one of the many bars in town, the evening business hours for visitors who might need services are pretty much non-existent. I think there is only one convenience store that is open 24/7 now?
- » People that work with visitors, not including hotel staff, may be nice to visitors simply due to their nature and is what is expected from them for their employment, but very few are “trained” in hospitality.
- » What public restrooms?
- » Trash receptacles seem to be okay at the parks, but recycling receptacles are almost non-existent. Some have been removed that were once placed around town. The cardboard recycling bin next to the recycling center is difficult to even use. You have a little slot to put cardboard inwhile the wind is blowing, not an easy feat. It would be better to have a building, doesn’t needto be huge, where people could back up their vehicle and drop off the cardboard and also have the machinery right there at the building so that the cardboard could be processed as needed.
- » The city looks like a dump because there is no code enforcement. It is insane. Until that changes Rawlins will continue to suffer a horrific reputation across wyoming and beyond.
- » Rawlins will die if it keeps going down a trashy road.
- » Parks are very sad looking and there isn’t much to do for people traveling through or little kids
- » Businesses are not consistent with there hours.
- » Employee are not trained with hospitality.
- » Our city is the worst I have seen in 50 years.
- » More focus needs to be put on restoring and occupying historic buildings. Allowing businesses to put up signage would also be beneficial. Downtown is a ghost town and extremely run down.
- » Who thinks that employees are receiving "good host” training? If lucky enough to have anemployee, its a warm body cuz no one is applying for jobs.....there is no concerted effort to accommodate the Service Industries (big picture): affordable housing, TIPS trainers, GoodHost trainers, a real Chamber of Commerce? if we had commerce that is....
- » Enhancing options for tourists also enhances the experience for locals and residents of these communities as well. It’s a symbiotic relationship.
- » The East entrance to town looks awful and that is where the traffic seems to be.
- » Weeds are everywhere more sidewalks and better roads are a must. More trees along walking paths more trees in general!
- » Quit investing our tax payer dollars on revitalizing infrastructure’s that have clearly already failed. Hire a real city planner and start building an actual township.
- » New business needs to happen, Rawlins doesn’t have enough option, why do you think everyone goes out of town for their needs? NO OPTIONS in Rawlins.
- » There needs to be more done for the teens and children in the community.
- » If Rawlins want to stay as the cozy, homey feeling community, we DO NOT need more buildings/new developments!!
- » I don’t think Art is what attracts people to Rawlins. It would be in its best benefit to get a few more restaurants whether they’re local or franchise they’re just not enough places for people to eat and most the time you don’t know if they’re gonna be open or closed.
- » There it is again. Keep the visitors out; make them drive through, and not want to stop.Rawlinsites are rude, they have a shove it in your face if you don’t like it attitude. How many times have you heard someone say, “If you don’t like it you can leave.” At the same time, theyare kind; snowstorm stops I-80 and someone puts out a call for hot food and blankets? Morethan enough are delivered. Unfortunately the rudeness prevails.
- » I agree and disagree with biking and walking because of the short summer. Restrooms even at parks are most the time closed or under maintenance. Most of the restaurants do not train the servers at least not properly. Trash receptacles are not available. We have a cardboard recycling but even most stores have done away with trash cans
- » Rawlins has too many trashy, abandoned buildings and too many weed violations coming into town from any direction. Not inviting at all.
- » Everything is closed on Mondays, everything. It is very hard to send any tourists to a place to eat when only Bucks is open.
- » People have bad customer service in town. And so do people leading the town. They don’t want to see it grow. No one takes pride in the town anymore.
- » Spruce St appearance makes town seem old n run down-too many old vacant buildings! Bring in more shops to fill empty downtown buildings that would interest a visitor to wander around and give the shops that are there a fighting chance.
- » There are some who deal with visitors and shoppers that have no idea of hospitality. Talk with pride for your town and it will encourage a visitor to check the town out for themselves. Overall, some training on catering to visitors could only help!
- » Rawlins residents are extensively hostile to anyone not born here. I’ve experienced, seen it on action, and know many people that feel the same.
- » There is absolutely nothing pretty about our town when you enter off the highways. The entire state talks about how gross Rawlins looks and no one wants to stop here
- » The walking path could also use a couple trash cans.
- » I think there are a lot of empty storefronts.
- » Power wheelchairs are often navigating on our roads rather than sidewalks - we need maintenance on our sidewalks.
- » Potholes on inverness/Edinburgh get a quick fix/band-aid repair frequently, but the repair never lasts a whole week. Water main breaks are an issue as is the whole water infrastructure. Access to medical care could be improved. None of the clinics are open on the weekend. I love that traffic isn’t an issue. I love walking into businesses and the people working there remember you. Very friendly. There are a lot of people trying to make it a better place. I’ve seen it improve over the years, but it’s not where it needs to be if you are wanting to attract visitors, businesses, and population growth.
- » Sidewalks and curbs need to be fixed and then maintained
- » I would love there to be more for young adults.
- » Sidewalks need attention. I would also like to have a focus on more activities for people who do not drink or have children. Bringing in new businesses and social opportunities could greatly improve the quality of life in Rawlins.
- » There needs to be more tradespeople in Rawlins. It is hard to get people do do repairs on the house. I usually have to hire plumbers, electricians, carpenters, etc. from outside cities, such as Rock Springs or Casper. Events and attractions are usually kid centric, it would be nice to have events geared towards adults who are looking for an outing (such as having a date night). One thing that I would like to see is the revitalization of the Strand Theatre. It would be a great place to have shows. It would be a great venue for the Rawlins Music Academy to play and put on shows. it would be refreshing to see a variety of musical acts playing Rawlins such as a Jazz band and/or Classical (which I’m sure the Rawlins Music Academy has at least one of these), or possibly folk/western musicians. I would like to see more than just some ZZ Top wanabee cover band playing at the park. The old Historic Parco Theatre in Sinclair does it from time to time, and when they do have shows, it is an awesome experience. Also, as previously stated, I would like to see the Strand Theatre revitalized in a way that would be done in a way that would reflect the historic period in which it was built.
- » I feel safe because I carry 24/7.
- » Don’t know about disabled, but better sidewalks in residential areas would be better.
- » Trash can around town are often overfull. There are way to many sex offenders close to parks and schools and the judicial system victim blames to the point people don’t want to report problems.
- » Code enforcement would improve things.
- » Better wheelchair access.
- » I find that there are a lot of sport activities. However, not all kids are into sports.. An updated park at Washington Park would be great, an outdoor pool would be wonderful for summertime, we’re not a big fan of the indoor pool as the chlorine is amazingly too strong for us. A family center would be wonderful, Bowling alley or an arcade of some sort. We often times find ourselves going out of town for entertainment so we don’t actually spend our money locally.
- » I have asked the mayor and others for street signs to slow vehicles on my street down and they haven’t showed any interest in helping with a big problem.
- » Too many weeds in public areas is a fire hazard.
- » Rawlins provides enough but not a great living space, others have more like some SD. Small towns have a focal point and you cannot see community togetherness. Need more street art.
- » Some areas of town are not well kept.
- » Need Senior Assisted Living Housing
- » Youth activities are limited, unless you play sports. Rec Center needs more indoor activities.
- » The deer are beautiful, but seem malnourished and are incompatible with in-town living (e.g.deer poop everywhere, garden damage, etc). If they MUST stay in Rawlins how about creating some kind of preserve nearby for people to care for them and visitors to view them as an attraction? Damaged sidewalks, unpruned trees, and sidewalk-parked vehicles make walking some of our beautiful neighborhoods difficult. The lack of tradesmen to repair the beautiful old homes in Rawlins makes it extremely difficult to contemplate remaining here. How about partnering with the higher ed center to develop some home repair classes for community members and/or instituting an apprenticeship program for youths who may not want to go to a 4-year college? Finally, winter snow removal from all streets within city limits would greatly improve life for all, especially our seniors.
- » Snow removal is slow and letting it pile up in the middle of the lanes on busy thorough-fares is hazardous. Pot holes not repaired or take too long.
- » A variety of activities are available if you can afford them. I cannot.
- » Cemetery needs toilets for elderly visitors.
- » The water quality is the worst I’ve ever tasted. I drink store bought water. It’s such hard water here.
- » Residential needs improvements yards and older abandoned homes. The safety of this community needs greatly improvement - there are dogs loose every day and the noise level after hours are very disruptive. Wildlife needs to be taken care of by animal control - seniors aren’t able to do this! Quality of life would be better w/better more doctors and specialists. We need knowledgeable personnel in running our community.
- » This town needs to change its ways of thinking and operating if the town wants to survive the next 10 years. Rawlins is very much a dying town because the people here who are in charge don’t want to expand the town
- » Town Infrastructure is more important to me than the flowery, “beautification “ stuff people want to add. I want to know I’ll have water tomorrow and not wonder when the next break will happen.
- » Over priced city utilities.
- » A printed, concise monthly calendar of upcoming local events would be nice to look ahead “ata glance”. Perhaps with our monthly water bill? Might be more likely to attend.
- » I think that’s there is not a lot of things to do around town especially for teens. I know that the funnest part of my childhood was being able to go to the bowling alley play games and play bowling and it was fun until they closed it down and left us with nothing to do
- » I want Rawlins to be good for my children but I fear for what they would do once they graduate high school. What would compel them to live here with poor infrastructure ie water/sewersystems, & roads. No hospital or limited health care, getting rid of ob/gyn care was pure stupidity. You cannot expect to grow a town if you think pregnant women are going to want to drive to Laramie every week very pregnant & battle the weather as well. Also not everyone is welcoming to outsiders & new residents. I’m not born & raised in Wyoming but I appreciate what Wyoming can give my kids, especially a small town like Rawlins. I fear unless we come together as a community and work together I will want to move my kids to an area where thereare better opportunities for them. This town does not pay their employees enough, smaller towns like Douglas pay better & don’t have the wind as bad. We need to think outside the box if we wish to attract people to want to live here.
- » I’m only here for my husbands work. This place is so depressing.
- » While some of the newer neighborhoods are well maintained, all the the apartment buildings and trailer complexes are old and in very poor condition.
- » The lack of pride in the city is apparent. Pride should start with the students yet they get little support from the community. Show up to all events and let them know how proud of them you are and they will take that to the next level. And the schools themselves have just become faceless. There is no attempt for school fun, which builds comeraderie between all students. Spirit week/homecoming is a joke now.
- » We do actually have a beautiful community and i am happy to live here, i am simply being highly critical because i know we can defiantly do better and nothing is going to change for the better if we do not point out what needs to change.
- » This town needs to be better.
- » This town needs to improve their attractions
- » There are so many run down buildings in need of repair that are just an extreme eyesore. You see orange tickets the building should be torn down and cleaned up. Vacant parking lots are a better eyesore than building falling down.
- » I’m going into the military and won’t stay here.
- » Residents can’t afford the high water bills and have let yards and trees die. Need to lower water rates to help beautify residential areas All my neighbors had beautiful lawns before but can’t afford to water now. So sad
- » Sidewalks need updated with proper ramps. Wheelchair bound ppl have difficulty
- » Residential homes are in quick decline.
- » Unless your children are in school sports there tlefor them to do in the community except the movie theater at night.
- » Very expensive to participate in youth activities
- » If you have money to get involved in youth sports or recreation then there’s participa-tion for youth but if they are low income they have nothing
- » I think there is alot for adults and children to do as far as outdoor activities. I think Rawlins could use some more indoor
things for adults and children. Such as a bowling alley, rollerskating rink, have a movie theater that is open more than just weekends, an outdoor theater in summer to fall. Different ideas such as those and less bars :(
- » Love living in a small town where I see people helping each other every day!
- » Residential areas, as a whole, are definitely not well maintained! There are pockets of nice areas, but mostly, Rawlins is a dirty little hole. The streets are falling apart, trailers are left parked on the roads for months at a time, many residences look like a salvage yard, and too many trailer parks have old, rundown trailers in them, by definition, trailer trash.
- » There are outdoor activities in Carbon County, but very few that the county actually promotes or takes advantage of. A good example of this is Miracle Mile. You can find information about it online, but there is nothing in Rawlins that talks about it. We need an actual visitor center that people can go to with maps of area attractions, visitor information, not only about the area but where to get help if needed. I’d love to see a nice building where there are souvenirs for sale, books about Wyoming and a knowledgeable person who could talk about the area, point people in the right direction, suggest places to eat or things to do. Unfortunately, Rawlins is a place people come to because they are on their way to someplace else.
- » There is extremely little for kids to do in Rawlins, especially during the winter. Was the skateboard park ever completed? I don’t know, but even if it was it probably isn’t usable for 8 months out of the year because it’s filled with snow. The bowling alley closed down. I guess there is a roller rink now, that’s nice. Thereare some large buildings just sitting vacant, why not look into an indoor paintball/laser tagcourse or new bowling alley, arcade...come up with other ideas!
- » No it is not easy for disabled people to get around in the community. Many businesses aren’t even ADA compliant with high steps to get to the door, as an example.
- » Define quality of life. It’s expensive to live here but there isn’t a lot to do. We don’t (yet) have to worry about the migrant crisis. Politically, I’d rather live in Wyoming than most other states. Illicit drugs are still illegal, so far.
- » Will I be here 5 years from now? Most likely because my parents are in their 80’s and need my help. They would like to get out of Rawlins but just can’t financially. I’m just waiting for them to pass on and I will be out of this armpit “city”.
- » Enforce codes. People have junk piled in their yards. Superior motors is an eyesore. Buildings are in disrepair everywhere. Abandoned hotels. Some main roads need repaving. Think about what someone passing through sees. They notice what long time residents don’t and they dont get a positive impression.
- » I think our parks need to become more inclusive to children, wheelchair bound, autism, and children with limited motor skills.
- » I will live here i bought my home now regret it. I would sell quick with the right offer
- » The sidewalks need to be improved upon for disabled people. The City Hall in Rawlins is not conducive for those in wheelchairs and does not encourage disabled people to come inside.
- » Cost of living here is skyrocketing. Taxes and fees have gotten out of control and there is no return or improvement with the higher taxes and fees
- » Rawlins is in a state of emergency on all fronts!!
- » The city is extremely rundown. It’s hard to get around town during the winter. There isn’t very much unity. People only seem interested in gossiping about each other.
- » There doesn’t seem to be many events where people feel welcome.
- » My block and neighbors are wonderful and we help each other all the time - I’m blessed, and the exception. Next block over - 12 cars in one driveway, 1/2 tarped boats on blocks and washer dryer out on empty lot for all of us to witness the rotting of it......its a block by block deal, cuz there is no enfo
- » Rent is too high and the places to rent are trashy looking inside and out we have slum lords not landlords, activities are more for elementary not middle school and definitely not the high school students. Our roads are horrible!!!!
- » I’d move out of this town so fast if possible.
Our housing market is ridiculous, our lack of development is ridiculous, and if it was for the refinery, prison, railroad, and oil field this town would have 500 people living in it with nothing but abandon buildings because we don’t have a city manager who cares to actually try and grow the city and when we do get one in who tries all the old heads push back. Be better Rawlins and Carbon County.
- » If you build it they will come. Bring in the business opportunities quit voting against change. The time is NOW. We need more for kids and teens to do. A
skate/bike park maybe?
- » We need to stop the thefts that have been happening lately!!
- » Drive into town from I 80. And take pictures on each side of Cedar. Then put them on a screen and look at them. Gas station in dirt, abandoned buildings, worn out signs, poorly kept buildings and homes, take a good hard look. There is a lot to see. Drive into Rawlins from the west side, and take pictures. Abandoned businesses, dirt, no trees, businesses built on dirt entries, some with pot holes, and of course the abandoned motels, falling down, tell me you are proud of Rawlins and want to stay awhile. We have plenty of bars and lots of places to shoot guns.
- » As far as outdoor recreation we have available we do in sports during school and the few extra things we do have as I stated before like the skate park is not very appealing. The new gold simulator I believe should be at the Rec center. The REC could offer so much more and should be open especially later in the evenings for those getting off work and on the weekends is a big plus. I use to buy memberships or punch cards but now I feel it isn’t worth my time for them to always be closed when it’s more convenient to go. 4-9pm or 10pm
- » For people who are confined to wheelchairs, the parking can be a challenge.Handicapped spots are not abundant, and the places for a van with a ramp are tough to find. We have skipped events because of not being able to find a reasonable spot to park. (The one in front of the Elk’s Lodge is great if it is open.)
- » Health care will drive my family out.
- » This is a good town. Tho I do worry about our youth, many of them are left home while Gardians go drink. There is a very high percentage of children that don’t have anything to do. It’s nice to see middle school dances again, but the lack of actual things for them to go do in the winter is upsetting. No Roller skating rink, or bowling alley for them to go to really sucks. The movies and swimming are many have. I worry about our teenagers not having any options but school activities, and social media to keep them busy. It’s vital for children to have outlets, and many parents can not afford to put them in sports, so a cheap arcade with pool tables and what not should be available. Like the pool hall….. I know hands are tied there but it’s really upsetting
- » It is very hard for disabled people to get around in town especially in the winter time. Because of the water issue, many people have given up on beautifying their businesses or residential homes.
- » I love Rawlins! I think the people here are mostly friendly, but I am a friendly person. I had driven through Spruce St to go to Casper for years and thought Rawlins was a run down town. Then I discovered downtown and was so impressed with the look of it! There is such potential for an active shopping experience for those who like to wander through quaint towns stopping off the highway. There are some fabulous shops downtown with owners who work so hard to create an experience and nice products. The Thrift shop is a fun experience, as well. The business section on the east end of town is set up well with those running the stores friendly and helpful. Again there are some empty buildings that could attract more visitor dollars. I think we could also attract more visitors if we tried to bring in some of the old timer type of fast food restaurants, like A&W and Dairy Queen. An ice cream type of place, like Cold Stone would also bring in visitors, I believe. A place like Bucks would be nice on east end that is open like Bucks. It is very frustrating to get a sit down meal certain days of the week here! Rawlins has so much potential where it sits on highway and distance from other towns. There is no reason for Rawlins to be called bad names and passed over!
- » I always tell people from other parts of the state - don’t look AT Rawlins look in. Best people around!! We are so affordable compared around other communities in the state. Could we clean up & look like we are proud of our community all over - yes!!!! The tall grass is a huge ugh to most visitors in people’s lawns and public areas. We look like a broken run down no economy town. We are not! We need volunteers to not just clean up the highways & cemetery. A group that would mow for seniors and handicap residents. Do some drought tough / low maintenance landscaping for those people. If we show pride and care for our community people in the community will be more likely to have pride in their property and themselves. It’s a ripple effect. Maybe paint some houses. Anything to make the outside look loved. Visitors aren’t going to stop. Can’t keep town up how is this community going to keep up the historic sites? Roads? Restaurants?
- » Just because I know my quality of life is better here than it would be basically anywhere else in the US doen not mean there Is not any room for improvement. Stagnantcy will kill a community.
- » Major concerns about how the city is run, transparency is not happening, water issues are a major concern. Crime and drugs seem to be on the rise. Housing market is poor due to no one moving in. Jobs dependent on Sinclair. Workforce is poor. City resistant to change will keep it stagnant with even more decline in growth.
